Introduction
MetaMask is a widely used crypto wallet and gateway to blockchain applications. With the Chrome extension, you can store assets, manage accounts, interact with decentralized apps (dApps), and ensure security over your digital identity.
Step 1 — Install the Extension
- Go to the official site: metamask.io.
- Click Download and select Chrome.
- Install from the Chrome Web Store by clicking Add to Chrome.
- Confirm Add extension and look for the fox icon in your toolbar.
Important: Only download MetaMask from the official website or the verified Chrome Web Store listing.
Step 2 — Create or Import a Wallet
- Click the MetaMask icon and select Get Started.
- Choose Create a Wallet or Import Wallet if you already have a recovery phrase.
- Set a strong password to protect local access.
- Write down your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase and store it securely offline.
- Confirm the phrase to complete the setup.
Step 3 — Customize Networks and Tokens
- MetaMask defaults to Ethereum Mainnet.
- Add other networks (Polygon, BNB Chain, Avalanche) by entering RPC details from official sources.
- Add tokens manually by pasting contract addresses verified on Etherscan or the project’s site.
Step 4 — Connect to dApps
MetaMask allows you to connect to DeFi apps, NFT marketplaces, and games:
- Visit the dApp and click Connect Wallet.
- Select MetaMask and approve the connection request.
- Always review permissions before approving.
Security Tips
- Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase with anyone.
- Use a hardware wallet for large balances.
- Verify links and smart contracts before approving transactions.
- Revoke unused permissions via revoke.cash.
- Keep Chrome and MetaMask updated to the latest version.
Troubleshooting
- If the extension won’t open, restart Chrome and check extensions settings.
- If tokens don’t show, add them manually by contract address.
- If you suspect compromise, transfer funds to a new wallet with a new seed phrase immediately.
